“In a world in which we think we’re free, where everything seems normal and where every gesture becomes ephemeral, are we free to think for ourselves?” Hendrickx Ntela was born in Belgium to second-generation immigrants. Pierre “Dexter” Belleka fled the dictatorship in Liberia. Articulating their viewpoints, in Blind the two artists question the blindness, deliberate or otherwise, of a population confronted with a system that brags about illusory liberties but is cracking under everyday discrimination. The performers of the Konzi dance company worked with their eyes blindfolded to develop their other senses, including touch, a key element in the piece that is composed in the choreographers’ shared language of krump, an extreme, raw and authentic dance tinged with spirituality and physical intensity, and a vector of depth.
