Nach’s career was initially shaped by krump, a dance form that evolved in Los Angeles in the 1990s and was driven by rebellious energy in response to police repression in the city’s African-American neighbourhoods. In what proved to be a genuine physical shock for the dancer, the discovery of this extremely expressive dance form, which makes powerful use of the face and plays with contractions and explosions of articulations of the body, made an impression on her training and her own movement. However, in this solo that takes the form of a self-portrait, Nach also questions her own relationship with krump, her desire to take it elsewhere and combine it with other practices. Her powerful, skillful dance goes deep, questioning its ramifications and paving the way for exploring the paths she has taken. A series of projected images reinforces this intimate exploration. Cellule appears like a breeding ground for a singular and striking dance that reinforces the presence of an artist whose work we will be keen to follow for many years to come.
