For Charleroi danse’s associate artist, a powerful image and an ancient ritual provided the starting point for bringing together the two creations presented here in dialogue: Skid and Thr(o)ugh. Onbashira is the name of a festival that has been held in central Japan for around 1,200 years. To celebrate renewal, hordes of men transport pine trunks weighing several tonnes down the side of a mountain before erecting them in Suwa Shrine. The first part, Skid, takes place on a slippery slope and evokes the extremely risky descent. On a tilted wall, the delicate and precise dance battles with gravity, while a sense of danger hangs over the immense white surface and reveals the streaks produced by the movement of the dancers’ shadows. Alongside it, Thr(o)ugh is set up to mirror the erection of a gigantic tree. An immense cylinder sits imposingly on stage and becomes a tunnel, a threat, a living entity stronger and much greater than the human scale. Movement is a vital force here that keeps you alert, all performed to writing of well-honed beauty.
