March 2020, lockdown. And a massive realisation: “No economic, political, social, cultural or sporting activity is worth someone’s life.” So Serge Aimé Coulibaly felt “the need to celebrate life and to do it together”. The result is C la vie : a contemporary, adventurous, critical celebration supported by ancient rituals that punctuate life cycles: western carnivals in the West African tradition of the Wara. The trance and what comes out of it are summoned in a dance inhabited by the choreographer’s past as a percussionist. In addition to the seven performers, there is a singer and the composer Stéphane Édouard, while Magic Malik (already at the turntable in Wakatt) provides the musical dramaturgy. All that needs adding is an audience for this unusual ritual while, through the stage design and video, wondering how to form a circle – in other words society and meaning – on large stages today.
