What would these traditional Ukrainian dances have looked like without Russian domination? Such is the project of the Ukrainian choreographer Olga Dukhovna. Having worked in France for the past fifteen years, she presents physical routines, in which the neutrality of movement cohabits with a strong political charge. In Hopak, she dances a duo with François Malbranque, to invoke the heritage of Ukrainian dances lost, crushed and appropriated by the decades-long Soviet regime. They reclaim ownership of this spectacular and fierce dance, which is well-known for its virtuosity, casting aside the usual clichés attached to folklore. Stamping, leaping and sliding on their knees, the dancers build a space of resistance to the recent Russian invasion.
