Always in dialogue with a wide range of objects, costumes and masks, the bodies that populate Euripides Laskaridis’ work transform before our eyes from dreamlike figures into grotesque creatures, murmuring unfamiliar languages and adopting poses like stars in a cabaret of the bizarre. So it is no surprise that one night one of them came to the choreographer in a dream, providing the impetus for this piece featuring five dancers.
Here, the vibrant and hypnotic blue of lapis lazuli provides an ideal canvas on which to unfurl our imagination: used for 7,000 years and sold at the price of gold to extract its ultramarine colour, the stone has travelled down the centuries, decorating the finest artworks and royal tombs alike. This link between the celestial and the terrestrial anchors the dance with its contradictory nuances in which fear and the comic, the high brow and the trivial rub shoulders, weaving a fine web between very human tonalities.
