It all began in London at the National Gallery with the portrait painted by Cranach of a small princess of indeterminate age with an ambiguous look. An idea germinated and a show matured. In 1990 the Mossoux-Bonté company created Les Dernières hallucinations de Lucas Cranach l'Ancien. The work of attitudes, axes, angles, light, shade and framing sketch out the characters as if they are haunted by the memory of past lives. Turmoil and humour, sensuality and mystery bring life to the pictorial mannerism in these tableaux vivants.
Three decades on and the original device and dramaturgy remain, but some of its sequences have changed and others been added. The soundtrack embraces the sounds of today. A new generation of performers insinuate themselves into the atmospheres created by the painter and embody his characters. A journey through time and sensibilities continues, implacably inspired by the present, stubbornly listening out for the bizarre.
