Wie circus zegt, zegt risico. Gaël Santisteva jongleert met dit hoofdingrediënt uit zijnvakgebied. En met alles wat de circuswereld toelaat, omarmt en oproept: goochelen en acrobatiek, clownerie en gezwets, pathos en spot. Met pruiken, schuimrubberen rekwisieten, grote doeken in lamé en vastberadenheid onderzoekt een groep performers onze sociale relaties, onze mentale constructies en onze schone schijn. Net als de verrassingstaarten waarnaar de titel verwijst, speelt Piñata Cake met de verwachtingen van het publiek en vertrouwt het op verbazing – zonder ooit genoegen te nemen met oppervlakkigheid. Dapperheid, expliciet of impliciet, staat steeds centraal, in een opeenvolging van mysterie en onthulling, het intieme en het spectaculaire. Het plezier is doorspekt met gevaar. Overdaad of soberheid omgeven de vreugde met dubbelzinnigheid, in een kleine wereld van kunst en oprechtheid.
