Risk is the very essence of the circus. Gaël Santisteva takes the key ingredient of his chosen field and juggles with it. With everything else that the circus universe enables, encompasses and evokes : magic tricks and acrobatics, clowning and showman’s patter, emphasis and mockery. With wigs, foam accessories, big lamé sheets and tenacity, a band of performers probes with their acts our social interactions, our mental constructions and the appearances we present.
Like the party cakes referred to in its title, Piñata Cake plays with the audience’s expectations, and strives for our astonishment – without ever letting things remain superficial. Whether emphasized or subverted, the performers’ skills take centre stage, in a sequence of mystery and revelation, intimacy and the spectacular. Entertainment is spiked with danger. Excess or restraint insert ambivalence into our delight, in a little world of artifice and sincerity.
