Pièce de répertoire

Behind this strange title, an imaginary world unfolds that characterises the work of this Cape Verdean choreographer: a wild co-existence of beauty and ugliness, of horror and exuberant joy, a juxtaposition of images that make each creation a visual feast. In this piece that premiered at the Montpellier Dance Festival in 2018 and has since become part of the repertoire of the ballet of the Opéra de Lyon, we see disruption in the order of expertly orchestrated things. In a space that looks like a sports hall where a tournament is being held, a large number of figures with stiff bodies, as if moved by invisible forces, launch themselves with grimaces into cycles of repetition. These funny kinds of teammates, members of the same team of puppets, gallop to the sound of the soundtrack in the form of a collage, and the choreographer’s lively writing is echoed strongly by the Ballet’s dancers.
