For The Dancing Public (2021), Mette Ingvartsen studied dance frenzies, when agitated crowds took over public spaces. While no cause has been established for these outbreaks, psychiatry turned them into exhibitions in which bourgeois entertainment combined with apparent scientific curiosity.
“It was with a fascination for these odious institutional performances and their connection with dance, madness and excess” that Mette Ingvartsen began work on Delirious Night. Propelled by contagious bursts of energy, nine dancing bodies – like the nine muses – and the percussive music of Will Guthrie inhabit the night of a diabolical masked ball. A collective, unrestrained rebellious celebration, somewhere between hedonism and exorcism. “An event designed to transform sadness into joy, pain into pleasure, exhaustion into ecstasy, and laughter, applause and vocalization into dance.”
