Julius Eastman was born in Harlem in 1940 and died destitute and almost forgotten in 1990. He was Black, openly gay and the creator of performances that caused outrage. Although he created an impression on New York’s minimalist scene, it was not until the early 2000s that his work once again saw the light. Calixto Neto, whose work is focussed on telling the stories of peripheral existences and their singular paths through life, here presents a creative dialogue with this immense body of work and its declared political force. Notably by concentrating on the composition Evil Nigger, which highlight the tensions at the point of intersection of questions of racial domination and queer existences. With Bruits Marrons, the Brazilian artist and his team seize on maroonage as an opportunity for deviation, a strategy to recreate a community organisation sheltered from the dominant power. Ways of resisting, of organizing rage are invented in an artistic dialogue between sources of anger speaking to one another, in a creative gesture that bridges the ages to nourish a contemporary fire.
