“While this solo welcomes the work of time and the changes taking place under my skin and in my muscles, it’s also part of an evolution in my choreographic language,” says the artist, “a journey in which memory and topicality respond to one another or clash. I still have the desire to reinvent this language, to free myself from it, and confront it with the body – mine – and with today’s thinking.”
Zoom is one of the tools that Michèle Noiret has developed over time to create a kind of “dance cinema” in various forms and with singular choreographic characters. Returning to a stage stripped of any devices, in Up Close! she combines apparent simplicity and a labyrinthine story. In a self-portrait tinged with autofiction and peppered with the figures she has met along the way, the artist tenderly and mockingly scoffs at her own image, but not without denouncing the diktats – first and foremost ageism – that restrict women’s bodies.
