Eight performers proceed in a space that is porous with the audience, in various rooms separated by large painted tarpaulins. Dambudzo is a living work that transcends western artistic genres, and has been conceived by the artist nora chipaumire, from Mutare in Zimbabwe. This work recreates the spaces and ambiance of Zimbabwe’s shebeens, informal bars located in private homes where citizens can come together away from the white world and formulate ideas for resistance against the political authorities. In a structure made from simple materials – wood, plastic and cardboard – the dancers perform movements such as throwing, running and flinching. The bodies express the tensions and traumas inflicted by the colonial state, exacerbated by the barking of Rhodesian ridgebacks, those dogs trained by colonists to discipline the African peoples. In this anti-colonial work, the choreographer invents a new language, as poetical as it is oppositional.
