Over the past decade, Alexander Vantournhout has created both group ensembles and works for solo performers or duos. All of them have served to probe the perceptions of audiences. Moving outside the theatre gives rise to a major shift in the spectators’ focus. This same focus that challenges and interrogates the artist and their collaborators in the light of the context.
To what extent is the painting defined by its frame, its context ? What happens if the context, or frame, is removed ? or if the work is removed from it ? Frames explores this relationship, making use of the specific visual environments for play “in situ”. The ‘front-on’ view is abandoned in favour of multiple approaches. The quartet develops its living sculptures, meticulously constructs its forms of equilibrium, defies gravity and imagination, collaborating to trace its physical poetry in the public space.
