The motif of the sarabande has transcended the ages and their turmoil, from the medieval and baroque period through to contemporary music, not to mention its demonization by the Inquisition. Acting in conspiratorial synergy, the two artists seek in Saraband “ the emergence of a personal and collective memory, both conscious and unconscious ”.
Within a transverse timescale – from the distant past to the immediate present, from buried memories to their re-emergence – the memory of movements and bodies is deployed. Bodies that are porous to reality, permeable to rituals, playing host to the familiarity of forms and the force of surprises. With matching silhouettes – hair tied back, full pannier skirts, muted red and blue tones –, Erika Zueneli and Laura Simi sketch out a narrative of traces, of crossings, wanderings and excesses. Between concrete structure and intoxicating rant, an echo chamber, a space of passionate liberty.
