Two creatures that are simultaneously plant, mineral and human in form emerge from a cave, accompanied by six musicians who stroll out with them. These beings are embodied by the dancer and choreographer François Chaignaud and the Argentinian singer and composer Nadia Larcher, the inventors of this enigmatic and outlandish world, together with Nina Laisné, its stage director – who previously collaborated with Chaignaud in 2017’s Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando – drawing inspiration from Argentinian folklore and the European baroque era. Último helecho (which means “the last fern” in Spanish) sees dances, music and memories from another time emerging like hidden treasure, uncovered by this atypical troupe in its speleological role. This all-in show, sensual and enigmatic, embraces the complexity of South American cultures, with their blend of indigenous stories, European remnants and the influences of neighbouring civilisations.
