“African in its essence, universal in its reach, intimate in its emotion”, the blues is rooted in traditional Mandingo, Peul and Yoruba songs. It is “the voice of those who have weathered the storms”. And it is the medium chosen in this work by Serge Aimé Coulibaly, whose art connects the very essence of being human to the singular nature of sensibilities.
The choreographer couples six dancers with the words of the Chadian poet Dr. Koulsy Lamko, expressed by the Burkinabe actor Odile Sankara. As the backbone of Back to Kidal, its music serves both as an audio memory of the African continent on the move, and a connection between the past and the present. The intersections orchestrated by Patrick Kabré, a true connoisseur of Sahelian blues, are blended with Yvan Talbot’s electro textures, while the Malian singer Niaka Sacko brings out memories and the future, suffering and resistance, in this show designed as a multiple and immersive experience.
