Relativizing ? More like looking directly at the disaster. Then taking a sideways step. Karine Ponties propels Ares d’Angelo, Eric Domeneghetty and Iliass Mjouti onto a small boat that’s not particularly flimsy, where ‘toughing it out’ is less of a mantra than a form of magic. Magic that binds disparate beings, that thrusts the ambient gloom into its magician’s hat and then pulls out bursts of joy.
Does every artwork have the merit of responding to the suffering of the world ? The choreographer approaches the subject by contemplating “the triumphant and tragic outbursts of three victims of the worst circumstances, who extricate themselves from absurd situations with humour, who could have escaped their fates but prefer instead to throw themselves right into the melée”. Because to be honest the worst thing would be for nothing to happen.
Various aesthetic backgrounds shape this microcosm of fantasy, bubbling with anguish and generosity.
