How far will he go ? Anyone who’s been to one of Ivo Dimchev’s shows will have asked this question. For around twenty years, this Bulgarian artist has been creating shows that are exuberant, caustic and more than a little unsettling, where contemporary dance meets theatre, performance and a pop concert. Di/Strauss Technique will maintain this reputation. In it the performer incorporates melodies by the famous Viennese composer Johann Strauss, remixed in a camp style, which provide him with the raw material to lead a big gym session. Handing out ribbons and pompoms to the audience, his role alternates between a prankster sports coach and a guru with a ritual designed to heal the physical and psychological ailments of contemporary citizens. Behind the provocation, Ivo Dimchev distils without fanfare a queer emancipatory political project, intended to dismantle stereotypes by liberating bodies through movement.
