The story of Joseph the soldier was originally the subject of a 1917 work of music by Stravinsky, based on a text written by Charles Ferdinand Ramuz. Thus it was a story told by men. As Joseph makes his way homewards, he comes across the Devil in disguise, to whom he gives his violin in exchange for a magic book that tells the future. In the work created by the Os association, the story centres on a female soldier : in the aftermath of Algeria’s war of independence, while on her way to meet her fiancée she encounters the Devil. Two dolls created by Anne Dessertine and a living performer recount the story, at the heart of which is our relation with ethics: if art and music are traded for financial gain, what are we left with? To help us have conversations, small or large, starting from the threads of history and their present-day resonances.
