Nous sommes Orage, an immensely ambitious score by the young French composer Bastien David, is to be created two days previously at the Philharmonie de Paris. 90 minutes of immersive music performed by 35 musicians, while the audience stands around a large Burmese hanging bell or a metallophone (a type of enormous circular vibraphone designed by the composer). A harmonica organ, a trumpet organ : instruments designed and constructed for the purposes of a work that is unconventional, organic, floating and pulsating, all at the same time. An implied question: without amplification, can music possess the same ability to put bodies into a trance ? And can it liberate our energies, breaking the storm to summon up the light ?
