Deploying a complex network of movements connected across time, space, and the body, without the intervention of a central authority, ZOO/Thomas Hauert's playful improvisational structures form a dynamic system of unpredictable behavior, in which some dancers initiate a movement and others react to it, with this reaction triggering another movement within the same structure or initiating an entirely new development.
Drawing freely from a shared repertoire of physical principles, the dancers are responsible for the invention and execution of their own movement, as well as for the creation and development of group structures. They must adapt their individual roles within a dynamic constellation whose mechanisms are constantly transforming.
The cognitive capacities of such a system far exceed the simple sum of the dancers' individual abilities. It relies largely on intuition—as Hauert emphasizes, a neurophysiological faculty capable of being developed through experience.
A focus will be placed on combining the mechanics and forces of two or more bodies in contact.
Bodies together become a single creature and learn to coordinate and create as a single entity.
