Jum’s has its origins in images of the cabaret number Le Cheval danced by the artist Julia Marcus, who fled from Nazism in the early 1930s. Extrapolating from this dance, and indeed revisiting the underground choreography of 1920s Berlin, Marion Sage summons up other movements, images and stories. At their heart lie issues of domestication, of humiliations suffered, of obstacles to be overcome, discovering a way to respond with laughter.

Asserting her kinship with political cabaret, the choreographer and performer toys with forms. “Animal archaeology alongside fantasy, with the crossover between the dance archive and mythology producing a hybrid that’s raring to lose its mind ”
