As a dancer, choreographer, researcher and teacher, Marian del Valle was naturally drawn to one of the emblematic works from the history of dance - the subject that she teaches. The Rite of Spring (music by Stravinsky, choreography by Nijinski, costumes and scenery by Roerich) has since its creation in 1913 been the subject of multiple reinterpretations. The idea here was not to produce yet another version but rather to examine its themes in the light of the concerns of 21st century youth.
Overshadowed by the excesses of over-exploitation, the pagan rites on display in the original work are muted. “The dream of a community coming together to celebrate the earth seems almost unimaginable, and yet spring continues [...] to fill us with wonder ; youth still arrives, overflowing with life.” In a cycle of supervised workshops, ten or so young amateurs will form a non-hierarchical dancing choir.
