While demonstrating an intensity in solo performances, Jan Martens choreographs large ensemble groups with an extraordinary acuity and energy, as was notably the case with the triumphant Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones (2021), with Voice Noise (2024) working on the substance of movement, voice and rhythm.
Heightened musicality, the power of collective action, and a sense of intimacy are brought together in this new work for singular characters with varied horizons, forming the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance. “Music is not always what you hear, but also what you see and feel”, declares the artist, fascinated by rhythm, geometry, music scores and designs. Thus an audio landscape is born from movement in CANCEL BERTHA – an anagram of Carte Blanche, in a nod to the artistic process of deconstruction-recomposition of musical and choreographic elements.
