After studying traditional and contemporary dance in Seoul, Kyung-A Ryu, who has lived in Brussels since 2002, studied visual arts at La Cambre while maintaining an interest in philosophy and sound editing. Her main language – movement – resonates with a person’s relationship with their environment. She has a dual identity, with one foot in Europe and the other in Korea where the connection with nature is one of humility. By devising a dance in a bird costume, the choreographer questions this figure that is as symbolic as it is real in various cultures stretching from North America to the Far East. “How can we recreate a sense of the sacred and of listening in a space where bodies, images and languages are continually on the move? How can folklore and contemporary creation merge and reality be interwoven with fiction?”
L’Oiseau que je vois (The Bird I See) can be adapted and taken out of theatre’s black box into schools and public places.
