In 2019, the Brussels exhibition by Sophie Whettnall and Etel Adnan The Ice Field, The Forest and The Starshosted the premiere of the performances Mirage – déplacement and Paper Lane.
Following on from this, Olga de Soto again uses paper, which is reminiscent of the plant world but also a medium for words and images. Under the effects of manipulation and prehension, the choreographer and researcher makes this material a vector for sound as well as a surface for the projection for our imagination, a space-time of resonance.
Exploring the notion of “sound mirage”, summoning sounds from nature, witnesses of a disappearing world, Paper Mirage is also an act of resistance “against the digital revolution and the profusion of excess, high speed and high tech that is destroying the silence needed for contemplation, introspection and reflection”. Olga de Soto draws inspiration from the German sociologist and philosopher Hartmut Rosa and his recognition of the need for a healthy “radical deceleration”.
