While in Filles-pétroles the Ivorian choreographer cast two dancers from the Abobo district of Abidjan, here it is the village of her childhood and of her maternal ancestors that provides the starting place for her new exploration. Over ten years on from her dazzling Quartiers libres (2012), which brought her forceful choreographic writing to people’s attention, she is back with a solo in which she ventures to a place filled with memories and impressions. Nadia Beugré immerses herself in the early years she spent in the village of Yikakou. She creates a way to invite other voices and other presences to populate this piece alongside her, such as the maternal grandmother who handed down her name, Gbahihonon, and those of the powerful, but often forgotten Mandinka women who come to inhabit her dance. Music, songs and stories conveyed by the voice of a female griot support this living fabric of memory, illuminating the existence here and now of a woman dedicated to sharing her sensitive story.
